Understanding assignment questions

Reviewing the assessment guidelines

Before you start work on your assignment, think about the aims and objectives of the work you are doing and read the module outcomes. Work towards these.

Read the assessment criteria for the assignment. For most essay assessments, you will usually have to address criteria which relate to:

  • Presentation and analysis of concepts, ideas and theories
  • Application of these to your subject area
  • Addressing the question which has been set
  • The structure and organisation of the written work
  • Appropriate use of source material, evidence and referencing
